Time cycles of homicide in the early modern Nordic area

An extensive body of criminological research has shown that criminaland violent behaviour manifests time patterns in terms of daily,weekly and annual cycles. This is consistent with criminologicalroutine activities theory. Can we generalize these patterns to historicalperiods? In this article, we draw on a recently created uniquedataset, covering the years 1608–1699 in three Nordic regions, toexplore time cycles of offending in the early modern period.Examining daily, weekly and annual cycles, we find that lethalviolence manifested strong time patterns in the early modernperiod. A Bayesian Reconstruction of a Historical Population in Finland, 1647–1850

This article provides a novel method for estimating historical population development. We review the previous literature on historical population time-series estimates and propose a general outline to address the well-known methodological problems. We use a Bayesian hierarchical time-series model that allows us to integrate the parish-level data set and prior population information in a coherent manner. The procedure provides us with model-based posterior intervals for the final population estimates. Artikkelissa käsittelen pohjoisimman Savon rajojen muotoutumista keskiajalla ja 1500-luvulla Täyssinän rauhaan 1595 saakka. Sen päälähteenä on käytetty rajanmuodostuksesta kertovia tuomiokirjeitä ja rajaluetteloita, joita on peilattu paikannimitutkimukseen. Pääkysymyksiä ovat pohjoisen Savon Novgorodin ja Venäjän vastaisen itärajan muotoutuminen Pähkinäsaaren rauhansopimuksen (1323) jälkeen sekä Hämeen vastaisen länsirajan synty 1400-luvun puolivälissä. Domböckerna och den tidigmoderna tiden hör tätt ihop. I denna uppsats undersöks hur historiker och språkhistoriker utnyttjat domboksmaterial i sin forskning. Metoden är historiografisk och jämförande. Uppsatsen visar att historiker ofta varit intresserade av källkritiska aspekter medan språkhistoriker har intresserat sig för frågor förknippade med språklig variation och förändring. This chapter discusses seventeenth-century Sweden, where academically trained advocates and procurators emerged but attempts of advocacy monopoly failed. The case of Gabriel Abrahamsson—a son of a pastor, a former cavalryman and farmer, and, later on, a lower-level civil servant in Helsinki—proves that no specific privileged status or academic education was needed for advocacy in lower courts. The tradition to use any reasonable man as a legal representative continued, and trusted men from various social backgrounds with self-acquired legal skills acted as lay advocates. Transmission of knowledge in Venetian fourteenth-century chronicles

The doctoral thesis analyzes eight Venetian chronicles written c. 1340–1390. It looks into the transmission of these texts by examining their mutual relationships and by reconstructing the textual tradition of individual works. The research was conducted by using the book historical method in which an individual volume is examined from the perspective of textual history, its physical features and ownership history to give a global view of its genesis and functions. The method combines textual criticism and comparative textual analysis with codicological and palaeographical research.
